Basic Controls
Controller Layout
The Flick-It System
The Flick-It system is Skate's signature control method that uses the right analog stick to perform tricks. This innovative system mimics real skateboard movements, creating an intuitive connection between your controller inputs and on-screen actions.
Basic Flick Motions:
- Ollie: Pull stick down, then flick up quickly
- Nollie: Push stick up, then flick down
- Kickflip: Ollie motion + diagonal flick left
- Heelflip: Ollie motion + diagonal flick right
- Shuvit: Horizontal stick movement left or right
Timing is Everything
Success in Skate depends on precise timing and smooth stick movements. Practice the rhythm of each trick – too fast or too slow will result in failed attempts or awkward landings.
Beginner Tricks Guide
Ollie
The foundation of all skateboard tricks. Pull the right stick down, then quickly flick it up. This creates the basic jump that enables all other tricks.
Kickflip
Perform an ollie, then add a diagonal flick to the left. The board will flip once before you catch it. Timing the catch is crucial for landing.
Heelflip
Similar to kickflip but flicking diagonally to the right. The board rotates in the opposite direction, requiring different timing for the catch.
Shuvit
Move the stick horizontally left or right to spin the board 180 degrees without flipping. A good trick for learning board control and timing.
50-50 Grind
Approach a rail or ledge at moderate speed and ollie onto it. Both trucks will lock onto the obstacle. Balance with the left stick to maintain the grind.
Manual
Balance on two wheels by holding the left stick back (wheelie) or forward (nose manual). Use subtle adjustments to maintain balance while rolling.

Gameplay Mechanics
Physics and Momentum
Skate's realistic physics engine means momentum, speed, and approach angles significantly impact trick execution. Building speed before attempting tricks increases your chances of success, while proper positioning ensures clean landings.
Key Physics Concepts:
- Speed Control: Use triggers to push and brake effectively
- Approach Angles: Line up properly for grinds and gaps
- Landing Impact: Higher tricks require more precise timing
- Weight Distribution: Balance affects trick success and stability
